Residual insecticides can be a critical component in an integrated pest management (IPM) bed bug program. Here are four tips to maximize their use:

  1. Conduct thorough inspections. Identify all current and potential harborage areas, and use monitoring devices to enhance results.
  2. Target harborage sites. Apply product in areas that are less disturbed and away from light.
  3. Rotate insecticides. Use products with different modes of action for long-term resistance management.
  4. Use advanced formulations. Lipophilic microencapsulated formulations, for example, can enhance a treatment’s efficacy by increasing the likelihood of a bed bug getting a lethal dose.
