It’s raining spiders in Australia, a phenomena that occurs fairly often. Live Science and NBC News report the “spider rain” is actually spiders that are ballooning, or releasing their silk from a high location. It happens all the time, according to University of Akron biology professor Todd Blackledge, who is quoted in the article. Most people don’t notice the activity because only a few spiders descend at once. In Australia, favorable weather conditions carried what appeared to be millions of spiders through the air.
