Termite species can differ greatly in their foraging behavior, and understanding these behavioral differences is critical for controlling them. The Eastern subterranean termite, Reticulitermes flavipes, and the dark Southeastern termite, R. virginicus, have similar appearances. Their distribution overlaps, so proper identification is important.

The dark Southeastern termite is considered more vulnerable to disturbance, which can lead to recruitment loss and lack of feeding in monitor and bait stations. If you encounter this termite, try to collect soldiers or alates for identification. Additionally, if these termites aren’t feeding on bait, a liquid termiticide may be best
for effective control.
