A little trick when using snap traps is to get the rodent species to chew the kick plate by rubbing the oil or foodstuff ever-so-lightly on the kick plate. I find snap traps are more effective when rodents chew on the plate rather than trying to consume food because it reduces failure.
With oil or a light food substance on the kick plate, you don’t have to worry about chance success of food uptake without tripping the trap. If the kick plate is impregnated well enough with any food attractant, then the attraction is inherent with the trap, not a separate food item subject to disturbance and alteration.
In addition, it is best to place the kick plate adjacent to the wall: Rodents using guide lines have less chance of bypassing the snap trap.
