Abell Pest Control, based in Etobicoke, Ontario, will donate $25,000 over five years to the University of Guelph’s Honey Bee Research Centre to help fund graduate research.
The company also intends to launch a website that would give those with honey bee problems access to beekeepers, who can safely and effectively remove bees.
“We’ve been working quietly to develop a network of beekeepers who can come and relocate swarms,” Michael Heimbach, the company’s director of business development and marketing, told media who toured the research center Aug. 8.
Paul Kelly, research and apiary manager at the research center, told the media that honey bees aren’t necessarily in a “big decline situation” because beekeepers manage them. He said honey bees are bred and farmed, and therefor can be replaced.
“There are situations where education is more necessary than control,” Kelly told the Guelph Mercury Tribune.
