There has been a recent influx of mosquito control products — from residential mosquito misting systems and gravid yellow fever mosquito (Aedes spp.) traps, to advances in pesticide-infused clothing and personal repellents. And yes, there’s even a smartphone app for helping control mosquitoes. No matter what strategy you use, here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • An integrated pest management (IPM) approach is the most effective, and includes the reduction of adult mosquitoes, using adulticides and traps; the elimination of breeding sources and resting sites; the prevention of egg and larval development using larvicides; and the reduction of the risk of human exposure through education and preventive measures.
  • Many species of mosquitoes can easily travel up to a half-mile. Therefore, mosquito control often requires a community effort.
  • Mosquitoes prefer dark, humid areas, with little air movement, as resting and staging areas. To increase light penetration and introduce airflow into conducive areas, consider trimming or thinning shrubs; increasing the spacing between deck boards; removing lattices, bushes or surrounding decks; and thinning ground cover.
  • Lastly, protect yourself while performing mosquito abatement services through the use of personal or clothing repellents, bite-proof undergarments, or exterior mesh mosquito suits.
