Stored product pests (SPP) management can be extremely challenging. Consider these best practices:

  • Proper identification is a must to help uncover critical information such as feeding habits, biology, life cycle and other behaviors. This information is key not only for your SPP management plan, but also as a communication point to your client.
  • Inspection is critical. Finding the SPP source can be easy sometimes, compared to the more difficult task of convincing a commercial client to dispose of the infested materials properly.
  • Pheromone traps are great tools for inspecting an infestation site, as well as for pre- or post-treatment assessment. Note that pheromone traps shouldn’t be used in place of actual treatments.
  • Consider your product choices. After deploying non-chemical controls, such as cleaning and sanitizing, think about the best placements and use sites for non-residual aerosols, baits or liquid residual insecticides that are labeled for use in and around stored goods and food-handling establishments.
