Careful, don’t fall
Gracing the cover of the December issue is Altadena, Calif., Rose Parade Queen Frieda Nilson, who is seen here adding a bulb to one of the trees in the city’s “world famous” Christmas Tree Lane. The tradition, which began in 1920 and continues to this day, features deodar cedar trees “bedecked with strands of colored lights that glisten every night” from Christmas to New Year’s eve, according to the magazine. Pest management professional Marion McCartney, manager of The Alderman Co. in nearby Pasadena, Calif., is shown holding the ladder. He served as chairman of the Kiwanis committee in charge of the event kicking off the 1953-1954 display, and is pictured with fellow committee member William Stitt.
Feast for termites
Reader William Exner submitted this photo of termite damage for the magazine’s “Termite Picture of the Month.” The bookshelf and its contents were found in an unoccupied house, and provide proof of the extensive damage termites can cause in a home left unchecked.
