As an Industry, Let’s Thank a Vet

So many qualities of the military, especially discipline, following protocols and problem-solving, dovetail perfectly with the requirements of being a successful pest management professional (PMP). That’s why the PMP magazine team — including U.S. Navy veteran Marty Whitford — was thrilled when the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) created the PestVets committee.

Since its inaugural meeting at Legislative Day this year, the committee has named Marty Overline, owner of The Aardvark Pest Management Co. in Philadelphia, as its chair. Overline is a former U.S. Air Force entomology engineer, so he has the experience on both sides to rally the troops, so to speak. On Oct. 21, the PestVets will have an afternoon meeting, a seminar, and an evening reception during NPMA’s PestWorld event in Nashville.

“Some of our key areas of focus for the PestVets committee are creating veteran awareness of opportunities in the pest management industry, providing assistance with vet transitioning, offering educational opportunities, and supporting NPMA members’ efforts to hire veterans,” says Janay Rickwalder, the association’s VP for communications, marketing and membership.

As an old U.S. saying goes, “If you enjoy your freedom, thank a vet.” What a wonderful way to salute a veteran’s sacrifices — to introduce him or her into a rewarding post-military career.
