While mosquitoes are sometimes viewed as a nuisance, they are more readily recognized as threats to public health. Mosquitoes carry diseases such as West Nile virus, dengue and Zika virus. Wet and warm conditions create a breeding ground ideal for species that overwintered as adults and are ready to emerge from their winter hiding spots.

The first step toward stopping mosquitoes in their tracks is to remove any standing water where possible. Advise customers to keep shrubs and landscaping around buildings and recreation areas trimmed. These essential steps play a large role in reducing humidity and resting areas for mosquitoes.

Lastly, remind customers about the importance of patching and sealing gaps in doors, frames and screens to prevent mosquitoes from getting inside. As always, effective communication and collaboration play a significant role in combating this public health threat.
