Teachers in Arizona walked out of their classrooms Thursday to demand more funding for public schools. Among the list of repercussions due to underfunding are cockroach infestations in classrooms.
“We move through the halls to step on cockroaches, and in the summer we remove caterpillars,” Cathy Nowicki, a math teacher at Kingman Middle School in Arizona, tells aol.com. “Today, we had one classroom that had cockroaches coming from the ceiling, and in another classroom there is a leak coming from the ceiling. How are we supposed to teach our kids in rooms that are like this?”
The “walk out” in Arizona, which closed the public schools state-wide, spurred from teachers in West Virginia, Oklahoma, Kentucky and Colorado have also taken action by staging walk outs or protesting at state capitals.
The Arizona teachers took to the streets to push state lawmakers to pass a budget that would increase funding for teachers’ pay, as well as improve classroom conditions.
