The Fab Five

In the February 1999 issue, this then-associate editor and Laura Watilo Blake, then-graphic designer, decided to illustrate a technical article about wood-boring beetles with a spoof on the album cover artwork of “Meet the Beatles!,” the Fab Four’s breakthrough U.S. album. Pictured from left are a cerambycid, buprestid, anobiid, bostrichid and lyctid.

‘Trouble in Paradise’

In the October 1999 issue, Bery Pannkuk, ACE, wrote a case study on how an integrated pest management program brought crazy ants as well as “plague-like levels” of Surinam, Australian and American cockroaches under control at the Krohn Conservatory in Cincinnati, Ohio. At the time, Pannkuk was the pest control manager of Scherzinger Termite and Pest Control in Cincinnati.
